History of Saluda
Saluda has a population of around 900 people. Because of its size it would be easy to miss, but it has a rich history. Skyvue Village is a perfect example of how a project can be uniquely designed to support a community and its history.
As with many communities in Western North Carolina in the mid-to-late 1800s, Saluda became recognized as a place for restorative health. Mountain air and the ecology of this region were felt to be therapeutic. For those living in the sweltering heat of South Carolina’s midlands and lowlands, Saluda became a summer haven. The first property purchased in Saluda was by a French consul from Charleston and others would quickly follow enjoying a reprieve from oppressive heat and humidity.
This historical connection to Charleston influenced the design for the community layout and individual townhomes, contemporizing the famous Charleston single house style. Skyvue Village’s unique design takes advantage of breezes funneled through side porches and incorporates private gardens within an urban context.
Both Skyvue Village models provide a great room and open style kitchen on the main level including a half-bath plus two bedrooms and two full baths on the upper level. The front units also offer a two-car garage and bonus room and home office option. Also included in the development is a small pavilion for another outdoor option to enjoy and for community gatherings.
After the arrival of the railroad in 1878, a crossroads known as Pace’s Gap became the chartered town of Saluda, NC in 1881. The railroad brought travelers from the Lowcountry of South Carolina escaping sweltering summer heat to enjoy cool mountain breezes. These first guests built homes on the seven hills in Saluda and during the turn of the century and many of these homes became boarding houses and inns to accommodate the many summer visitors. One of these inns was Skyvue Lodge built on this knoll across from Main Street where guests enjoyed both short and long-term stays.
In keeping with the familiar architectural style of homes built by these Lowcountry visitors, a new community is being built on this knoll called Skyvue Village. Claim your spot today in this uniquely charming town and begin living as if you’re on vacation every day.
